SERBIA & MONTENEGRO: Montenegro

SERBIA & MONTENEGRO A tiny republic in southeastern Europe, Montenegro's jam-packed with breathtaking natural beauty, and is the perfect place to kick back and unwind. Whether you're after pristine beaches and picturesque lakes or snow-dusted mountains and sparkling springs, there are contrasts galore here. Just think, you could be skiing in the morning and sunbathing by the afternoon! Stroll through the sun-dappled forests of National Parks, following rushing rivers. Get to grips with the great outdoors and try climbing or hiking over peaks carpeted with native black pine trees. Spend some time spotting wildlife such as birds, or even bears! Or for the ultimate chill out, lie back on silky-soft sands in total tranquillity. There's 200km of captivating coastline washed by the pristine Adriatic Sea to entice you. But Mother Nature's not the only one who'll work her charms on you here. You can't help but fall for the people either. Warm, friendly and proud of their fascinating heritage, they'll give you the biggest of welcomes to their beguiling country. You could easily lose yourself exploring the Medieval towns too, which are crammed full of character and history. The colourful past has left behind invaluable treasures throughout this proud country that are just waiting to be discovered. So what are you waiting for?

The name Montenegro (Crna Gora in the local language) is Italian for 'Black Mountain', and there are several theories as to how the name came about, one of which is the mountains of the hinterland being covered in forests of black pine. Mountains account for much of Montenegro's territory and the main peaks such as Durmitor, Bjelasica and Komovi provide a unique holiday experience with hidden glacial lakes, numerous pastures, forests, pointed peaks, diverse flora and fauna, fast, crystal-clear mountain rivers and imposing canyons. The country also has a 293 kilometre-long coastline with 117 unspoiled beaches and numerous scenic inlets, the largest of which is the stunning Bay of Kotor, a listed World Heritage site sometimes referred to as 'the Mediterranean's only fjord'. The official capital, and site of one of two international airports, is Podgorica which is located inland on the central plain, but the ancient mountain capital of Cetinje is still regarded as the heart of the country by many Montenegrins.

Beaches

Soft golden sands? Check. Brilliant blue-green waters? You got it. A beach lover's paradise? You bet. Montenegro is blessed with eye-poppingly picturesque beaches and what's more, there are 117 of them. From pretty pebble ones to fine sugary sands - whether you're seeking a bustling seaside town with plenty of amenities or a small, secluded cove, you'll find it all, and then some. The only thing that doesn't differ is the glass-like sea, which is among the cleanest in the world. And it's balmy to boot, so grab your snorkel and get swimming through the crystal clear waters. Why not charter a boat and set off in search of a virgin strip of sand that's only accessible by sea, and spend the day on your very own piece of paradise? Many of the shores are backed by woodlands, which provide welcome shade in the height of summer. The Mediterranean climate means much of the coast is blanketed by silvery olive groves and sweet-smelling orchards. It's an enchanting setting that'll sweep you off your feet.

Eating out

A tantalising mix of mouth-watering Mediterranean recipes and traditional mountain cooking is sure to get your tastebuds tingling. Try some of the local specialities such as cold hors d'ouevres like smoked ham and cheeses and dried bleak, a small bream-like fish. If you're staying in the north, you'll find authentic mountain food on the menu. Try creamy lamb with potatoes smothered in cheese. Along the coast and in central regions, you'll probably come across smoked carp straight from Skadar Lake and of course, plates piled high with lip-smacking seafood. More familiar tastes can be found at the many barbecue eateries, Montenegro's answer to fast food. Tuck into pljeskavica, the local hamburger or zingy barbecue sausages hot from the grill. For something sweet, bite into doughnuts served with honey and dried figs - a delicious treat.

Nightlife

You'll probably be surprised at how sophisticated the nightlife is in Montenegro's larger towns and cities. Buzzing bars, trendy jazz clubs and sleek discos catering to an international clientele are up there with the best of them. There's also a good selection of pavement cafes where you can enjoy a leisurely drink.

Shopping

Handicrafts are readily available in shops and markets in most towns. Worth looking out for are handmade wooden artefacts and utensils, embroidery, lacework, leatherwork, Pec filigree work, metalwork, local musical instruments, copies of religious icons and prints, and original paintings and sculpture. For everyday needs there are supermarkets, department stores and boutiques in the major centres.
