ITALY: Capri

Capri is a chic island basking in the Bay of Naples, only a short boat trip across from the resort of Sorrento and the Italian mainland. Over the centuries, this elegant isle has drawn visitors siren-like to its sun-kissed shores, from the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus to the British screen legend Gracie Fields. Internationally famed as a stomping ground of the rich and famous, Capri is a shopper's dream with many designer stores and stylish boutiques. The island boasts an almost unparalleled natural beauty made up of rugged cliffs which sweep down to the sea and verdant gardens which overflow with brightly coloured flowers and exotic plants.
Enjoy a ride on the funicular from the pretty main harbour to the capital of the island, Capri Town, where you can explore the intricate network of quaint alleyways and small squares. To the west of Capri lies another popular attraction, the quiet town of Anacapri, where you can take a chair lift up to the top of Mount Solaro to enjoy panoramic views of the island.
Beaches
There are several rock and pebble beaches around the island and there's a beautiful stretch in the south of the island at the Marina Piccola.
Eating out
After a day of shopping or sightseeing, there are plenty of sophisticated cafes and bars in which to relax. The mozzarella here is something of a local speciality and can be eaten on its own or with tomatoes, olive oil and basil as an Insalata Caprese. There are several local red and white wines including the fairly pricey, but very sophisticated, Capri Blu.
Nightlife
With a reputation that attracts those in the fast lane, the nightlife on Capri is both expensive and exciting. The Italians love to start their partying late, so things really hot up after midnight when there are plenty of discos and bars that stay open into the early hours of the morning. Every evening, however, starts off with a hearty meal with friends and the numerous restaurants here are a testament to this amiable culture - plus they offer a relaxed alternative to a night on the town.
Shopping
Long the haunt of the rich and famous, the shopping here will take you to designer boutiques housed among the narrow alleys and walkways that characterize the town centre. This is a great place to buy expertly crafted clothing, jewellery and the famous Capri sandals.
Local information

This was once the home of the Roman Emperor Tiberius and there are numerous ancient attractions such as the Emperor's Villa Jovis and the pretty Augustus Gardens. The natural wonders are equally stunning, with the Blue Grotto, which was once believed to be haunted by evil spirits and the Arco Naturale, a magnificent stone arch perched high on the cliffs above the sea.
